CFL Bulbs…Recycle in Puyallup

This one of the CFL Bulbs that we need to be careful with…or get used to mercury.
I just read an article in the newspaper about the Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs(CFL). Apparantly they have mercury in them and we shouldn’t be putting them in the garbage. There are places you can take them(for FREE) to dispose of them.
Please read the article in the Tribune……Click Here to read the whole article by Shelly Banjo.

It’s actually been illegal for years to dispose of these bulbs in the trash. It’s only becoming an issue now because the CFL marketing campaign finally got thru to people and people started using them. They should last for years but if you are using them in a socket that gets turned off and on frequently it can shorten their lifespan. CFLs are best used in lights that remain on for longer periods of time, like the front porch, kitchen, living room, etc. They are not necessarily best used in a high-traffic on-and-off area like the bathroom.
I’ve been using CFLs since 2001. What has been difficult is finding places to recycle them rather than saving a stack and driving them down to the transfer station (or dump) for proper handling. It can be a pain to kick around a pile of old bulbs. Home Depot announced a couple of months ago that they will begin accepting CFLs for recycling. I even tested this our at my local HD and had to ask where the box was, but it was there tucked into a corner. Until now there have been a few places that would accept them but might charge a nominal fee. But it has always been free to take them to the transfer station to be recycled. Now that Home Depot is on board, that will be even more convenient.

Thanks, Wendy. I appreciate your input. Most of us only pay attention to some things after we hear about it several times.
So, One of the reasons I am here is to remind people of the things I notice. I hope people continue to notice!!
